from addiction to the alter- SF Gate

“Dale Smith got married at San Francisco City Hall on Friday, a few blocks from the sidewalk steam grate that he used to call home.

By his side, along with his bride, were the two San Francisco police officers who helped pull him up by his boots. One of the officers even gave Smith the boots that he pulled himself up with.”

Humble resident on mission to help others on road to recovery- chron

“Chaplain Dale Ray Smith of Humble knows better than anyone what can happen when a person falls into a life of crime and addiction. His choices landed him in homelessness, addicted to crack, incarcerated and hospitalized from being shot.

However, Smith’s experiences had a surprisingly beneficial result. For the past 15 years, Smith has used his hard-earned wisdom to help rehabilitate those currently suffering the repercussions of their bad decisions, and to prevent troubled youth from making the same mistakes he made.”

that’s my girl- Poor Magazine

“I remember the day I met Mary Ann Smith. Her father Dale Ray saw me at the coffee shop on the corner of 6th and Market little more than a month ago. We greeted with a hug.

That was the only time I met Mary Ann Smith—poverty scholar and daughter of POOR Magazine’s author Dale Ray Smith. He informed me of Mary Ann’s death a few days ago. She passed away on January 3rd at the age of 36, a poverty scholar and native of San Francisco. Dale Ray’s voice cannot cover his sadness. “She was a beautiful person with a good heart. She would give you her last dime”.
